Our Dial-Up hardware is equipped with STAC compression cards, which compress data; improving your transfer rates up to 4 times! Much of the data that moves through your modem includes spaces and repeating patterns. STAC compression takes advantage of those patterns and applies other tricks to reduce the number of bytes actually transmitted. By doing this, it creates more room for sending more information, as much as 4 times more. This means that a 33.6 modem can send and receive data at up to 130 kilobits/sec, or approximately 13 thousand characters per second. 

 

Enabling STAC Compression

 

You can take advantage of STAC Compression if you are using Dial-up Networking, or are using an ISDN router. Enabling STAC Compression requires you to follow a few simple steps. For instructions on enabling STAC compression in Dial-up Networking, select your Operating System below.

Windows 95/98

 

  1. Double Click My Computer -> Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Right click on TCQ Internet, then left click on Properties.
  3. Click on Server Types. Make sure that only "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP" are checked.
  4. Click OK.

 

 

  1. Click on the "Start" button on the Taskbar.

  2. Click on Settings -> Control Panel.

  3. Double click on "Modems", then click on the "Properties" button.

  4. Click Connection -> Advanced.

  5. Click on the box next to "Compress data" so there is NO check mark in that box as shown below. At this time make sure that you have checks next to "Use Flow control" and "Hardware (RTS/CTS)".

 

 

  1. Click OK, OK and Close.

 

Windows ME

 

  1. Click on the "Start" button on the Taskbar. Then click Settings -> Dial Up Networking.
  2. Right click on TCQ Internet, then left click on Properties.
  3. Click on Networking. Make sure that only "Enable software compression" and "TCP/IP" are checked.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click on the "Start" button on the Taskbar.
  6. Click on Settings -> Control Panel.

  7. Double click on "Modems", then click on the "Properties" button.

  8. Click Connection -> Advanced.

  9. Click on the box next to "Compress data" so there is NO check mark in that box as shown below. At this time make sure that you have checks next to "Use Flow control" and "Hardware (RTS/CTS)".

 

 

  1. Click OK, OK and Close.

 

 

Windows 2000

 

  1. Click on the "Start" button on the Taskbar. Then click Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. Double click on Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Right click on TCQ Internet, then left click on Properties.
  4. Click on  Networking.
  5. Click Settings, make sure that only "Enable Software Compression" is checked. Click OK.
  6. Click General, select your modem and click  Configure.
  7. For Maximum Speed, select the maximum setting available. 
  8. Make sure Enable Modem Compression is not checked.
  9. Click OK and OK again. Close Network and Dial-Up Connections. 
  10. From the Control Panel, click Phone and Modem Options. 

  11. On the Modems tab, select the modem that you want to configure.

  12. Click Properties -> Advanced.

  13. Click Change Default Preferences. 

  14. In Data Connection Preferences, select Disabled in the Compression list.

  15. Click OK, OK and OK again.

 

Windows XP

 

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections.

  2. Click Network Connections.

  3. Click on TCQ Internet, then click Change settings of this connection under Network Tasks.

  4. Click the General tab, select your modem in the Connect Using box, and then click Configure.

  5. Uncheck Enable Modem Compression check box, and then click OK. 

  6. Click OK and OK again.

  7. From the Control Panel, click Phone and Modem Options (If you do not see Phone and Modem Option, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Phone and Modem Options). 

  8. On the Modems tab, select the modem that you want to configure.

  9. Click Properties -> Advanced.

  10. Click Change Default Preferences. 

  11. In Data Connection Preferences, select Disabled in the Compression list.

  12. Click OK.

* We highly recommend that you select 'Server Assigned DNS' in your dialer, instead of using an IP address.
